IbizaIbiza, an island which is one in a thousand! It is undoubtedly popular within the international club life scene. Every one who loves nightlife clubbing should have been at least once on this magical island. In the 60's, the island dissociated itself from the rest of the European resorts with the arrival of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. This religious cult hero called Osho was the leader of the sect and his hippytrain followed in his wake to Ibiza. They followed their hero to Ibiza and this gave birth to the party community here. But there is more to Ibiza than just nightclubs and paella and chips holidays. We advise you to leave the general tourist trail and discover the living and breathing Ibiza, which consists of a laidback town, un-spoilt powder beaches, remote and private rocky coves, secluded bays, hilly terrains dense with olive and fig trees, and restored pretty whitewashed farmhouses. A perfect place to walk, ride, and swim in crystal clear sea, the best time to visit Ibiza is before or after the blitzkrieg of summer partygoers. With a population of just 84,000 inhabitants, Ibiza has the distinction of attracting over a million tourists each year. The best place to travel to has got to be Ibiza Town. This town has plenty to offer from buildings with medieval history to elegant modern restaurants to beautiful and naturally secluded coves, and a lush green countryside. The cultural sightseeing includes the fortified town - D'Alt Vila, a UNESCO protected World Heritage site, which is full of serpentine narrow streets, with Renaissance parapets and severe looking watchtowers. This heritage site is known as El Soto and you can feast your eyes on some incredible views and on days when the skies are clear you can even see the Formentera Island that is nearby. As the walled area ends, it opens up into one of the most exciting places to visit - the Harbor and the Marina that reflect a combination of history and modernity. From here, you can walk to the nearby Vara de Rey where the famous and legendary Hotel Montesol stands majestically. Interesting, Ibiza is also the home to one of the most important wetland and ecosystems known as Ses Feixes. Located next to the Talamanca Beach, it is probably the only place that has remains of the ancient irrigation system used by Arabs. Besides this, there is an important bird sanctuary on this island. Despite how hard you may try to stay away from the regular stuff, it would be hard to ignore the temptations of the sandy beaches that beckon you at every step of your way around here! Brian Zinn © |
