Hotels in Rome
Finding a sleeping place in
Rome is not an easy task. There are hundreds of hotels, hostels and pensions in all price categories. Many of the city's cheaper hotels are located close to Stazione Termini in the eastern part of the city. Lodging more towards the old town centre isn't automatically more expensive, but it is harder to find a free hotel room without booking in advance.
Hotels in Venice
The problem with
Venice is that, when it comes down to accommodation, it does not really matter when you go there. At any time of year, it will be touristy, so be prepared to pay a price for it as well. However, accommodation is available in all sorts of categories, ranging from cheap to absurd high prices. We have put accommodation in three categories, namely, cheap, middle and first class as you can find out for yourself.
Hotels in Florence
Florence is always packed with overnight guests - at any time of the year. Especially between Easter and the start of October you are taking a risk in turning up without a pre-booked room. Last exit for desperates is always the accommodation office at the station. They can arrange last-minute reservations for a small fee, though in high season the queues here can be a nightmare.
Hotels in Naples
Naples offers a lot of accommodation - from a filthy and noisy hotel hole to a first class suite with sea view. You have to know what you want.
As soon as you arrive at the central station, hotel hawkers pretending being tourist officials will try to lure you to one of the hotels nearby. This is a dissuading choice to find a room in our opinion. The area around the station is dotted with hotels, so you won't need a tout to find a room. What you should do is to make sure to have a look at the offered room before approving. You will find a lot of cheap hotels (not always recommendable) around Piazza Garibaldi, not badly placed for the rest of town. Another - probably nicer - area to find comfortable accommodation is the area around the university, between Piazza Dante and the Duomo.
The Mergellina area at the far end of the waterfront (served by subway and trolley) commands outstanding views of Vesuvius and Capri, but ranges from expensive to a lot more expensive.
Hotels in Capri
Generally spoken
Capri is one of the most expensive parts of whole Italy, so you have to pay attention to the fact that rooms, also the sleep cheap offers, are a bit more expensive than on the mainland. But nowhere else in Italy you can find such an amount of lovely villas and small but elegant pensions with seaview and gorgeous atmosphere.
Hotels in Turin
Many of
Turin's cheap hotels are located in the sleazy quarter off Via Nizza, convenient enough but not an advisable choice, particularly for solo women.
Somewhat safer, but more expensive, are the streets opposite Porta Nuova, close to Piazza Carlo Felice. There are also a number of fairly reasonably priced hotels west of Piazza Castello.
Hotels in Pisa
Pisa is a nice and unexpectedly undiscovered city as soon as you leave the well-trodden paths, which means the area around the world famous Leaning Tower.
Nevertheless
Pisa has a lot of hotels and pensions to accommodate its various guests. Everything is available from a suite in an old medieval mansion to a cheap but comfortable hostel-bed or a camping space.
If you've got a car consider staying somewhere in the countryside, the northern region towards Lucca is dotted with nice spots. If you prefer staying inside the old city walls, make sure that there is a room in advance, especially in the summer not making a reservation can cost you some hours and phone calls.
Hotels in Genoa
A selection of hotels and "pensioni" (smaller type of hotels with generally only few but right services) is present in town mainly concentrated in the center or near the two (Principe and Brignole) railway stations. It is generally advisable to book in advance and with a large amount of time if you plan to come for the boat show in october as it is almost impossible to find a place even in the nearby villages and towns. Quite a lot accept small pets and have facilities for the handicapped. There are no camping in town but just in the outskirt and there is a youth hostel.
Hotels in Palermo
Most of the budget hotel accommodation in
Palermo is on and around the southern ends of Via Maqueda and Via Roma, in the are between the central station and Corso V. Emmanuele.
